Marco Island History
The Calusa Indians were the first to live in the Marco Island area. They were expert woodworkers, constructing canoes, boards and planks for homes, docks and piers. Unfortunately, the Calusa were wiped out by disease brought by the Spanish explorers by the mid 1700s. The Seminole Indians then replaced them as the residents of Marco. Until after the Civil War, there was little population living in the Southwest Florida region.

In 1870, W.T. Collier brought his wife and nine children to Marco Island. His son, William D. Collier, opened a 20 room hotel in 1896 that is now known as Olde Marco Inn. In 1922 Baron G. Collier (no relation to the other Colliers) purchased most of the island.

When the depression hit, it postponed any development of Marco Island until 1962. It was at that time when brothers Elliot, Robert and Frank Jr. Mackell developed a master plan for Marco after purchasing it for seven million dollars. Prior to Marco's development, there had been a population of only 550. Today's permanent population is 15,000 and 35,000 during the seasonal months.

Today's Marco Island has developed into a truly wonderful tropic destination. Where shopping and sight-seeing abound. There is plenty to do for all tastes; Jet skiing  and para-sailing for the adventurous, fine shopping and art exhibits for the sophisticated, and beaches, parks and fishing for the outdoorsman. Marco Island is a great place for those who are full-time or part-time residents.
