Naples History
At one time the only people to stroll Naples seven miles of white, sandy beaches were the Calusa Indians. The first settlers were Roger Gordon and Joe Wiggins, arrived in the late 1860s. a river and inlet bear their name to this day.

The name "Naples" caught on when promoters from magazines and newspapers told stories telling of the areas mild climate and abundant fish and game. Likening it to the sunny Italian peninsula, "surpassing the bay in Naples, Italy.

Naples quickly gained a reputation as a winter resort in the 1910-1920s. Social life revolved around the Naples Hotel, which played host to celebrities such as Rose Cleveland, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, Greta Grabo, Hedy Lamarr and Gary Cooper.

In 1911, Baron G. Collier, visited the nearby Useppa Island. He was so taken with the area that he bought over a million acres of untouched swampland and most of Naples. Collier believed that Florida's west coast could experience the same boom as it's east coast. Collier was the one who began the construction of the Tamiami Trail, the only paved highway linking the states two largest cities-Tampa and Miami.

Unfortunately Collier died before seeing his dream come true, but come true it did. Today, Naples enjoys unparalleled prosperity. The area's unrivaled sport fishing, hunting, boating, sun bathing, and beach combing still attract people today as it did a century ago.
